The Trail Went Cold - Episode 265 - The Alcatraz Escape (Part 2)
June 11, 1962. San Francisco, California. 35-year old Frank Morris, 32-year old John Anglin and his 31-year old brother, Clarence Anglin, attempt an elaborate escape from the Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary on Alcatraz Island. After sneaking out of their cells during the night, the three convicts enter the water in order to cross San Francisco Bay on a homemade inflatable raft, but an extensive manhunt fails to find them. While the authorities are inclined to believe the escapees drowned, certain pieces of evidence, including a photograph that was allegedly taken of the Anglin brothers in Brazil in 1975, suggest they might have survived. In Part One of our special six-anniversary episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we shared the basic facts of the Alcatraz escape. This week, in Part Two, we shall explore all the different theories surrounding the escape attempt and determine the likelihood of whether or not any of the three missing convicts could have gotten away with it.
If you have any information about this case, please contact the U.S. Marshals Service’s San Francisco office at (415) 436-7677.
